Kattam Butta - A traditional twist!

When it comes to draping a saree, we all expect a great level of effortless comfort to adorn it all day. Chettinad sarees are a great choice for ethnic celebrations such as festivals and ceremonies as they have a very traditional and uniquely south Indian look.

The Chettinad cotton sarees are especially versatile, as they can be worn comfortably for
office or on a daily basis as well as for formal occasions or parties.

Don’t we all expect to be able to wear traditional as well as stay in trend always? Here is
a reason to still rock the desi style with the touch of our heritage from our good old times…..

We at Knot N Threads are bringing you a new series of Kattam Butta Sarees.

Our Kattam Butta series are exclusively woven with intricate detailing . As the name says, the sarees are checked with buttas (tiny motifs inter-woven between alternate checks)

Take a closer look at our most prestigious creation, Kundhavi Series: It comes with a solid base colour in the body with a complementing secondary coloured checks and contrasting butta. The border comes in a third colour with Copper Zari with Chevrolet pattern; Coin Motifs – Double Side border. The pallu is striped with lines and buttas.

When it comes to weaving these types of designs, a great deal of effort is put in by our weavers. Sarees with Double color Checks; Buttas in between are a huge challenge for weavers as double warping is involved. For each colour the weaver has to prepare the warp. In this case, for each colour the thread has to be counted and carefully inserted the extra warp or butta.

This is the type of handloom saree called Kandangi Sarees of Chettinad region. They have adopted the checks and butta version and introduced the rudrakasha / dollar-coin motifs design which is from Traditional Madisar version which was once only known to be weaved in Sungudi Cotton Sarees only.

Chettinad variety sarees were presented as GI tags. Geographical Index tag in August 2019.
